Now & Then is an acoustic trio consisting of two guitars and vocals, featuring Shelley Miller, Dave Johns, and Hank Alrich. Working out of Plumas County in the heart of California's beautiful Feather River country, these three longtime musical friends enjoy presenting an eclectic selection of swing standards, plus an occasional folk song or bolero.
Shelley Miller, Now & Then's principal vocalist, brings keen insight and rare intuition to her interpretations of classic material, much of which she learned as a child from her mother's singing and the music played around her house.

She makes the standards of the 1920's, '30's, and 40's stylistically her own, and sings in French, Spanish, and Portuguese, as well as English. An extremely versatile singer, Shelley performed with rock ‘n' roll bands in high school and with the Chamber Ensemble at Humboldt State University. She is currently a featured vocalist with the Quincy Big Band.
Dave Johns is an outstanding guitarist, known for his lyrical chord style of accompaniment, who also does double-duty on vocals. Since Dave took up the guitar over forty years ago he has become a nationally renowned accompanist in the Texas Swing style of fiddle music, been referred to as a "master" of that style in Strings magazine, been a hot pick in Guitar Player magazine's Reader's Poll, accompanied Mark O'Connor, three time winner of the National Fiddle Championship held annually in Weiser, Idaho, and toured nationally with Benny Thomasson, the originator of the Texas Swing style. As Washington State jazz and swing aficionado Bill LeBaron said of Dave's playing, "The guy's got an entire rhythm section and orchestra packed into that guitar". Dave is also guitarist for the Quincy Big Band.
Hank Alrich, who moved some twenty-plus years ago to Indian Valley from Austin, Texas, plays a variety of instruments in many styles. In Austin he played with several fine bands, and has accompanied some excellent artists for selected performances, including Eddy Arnold, Doug Kershaw and Charlie Daniels. With over four decades in the music business, Hank offers audio recording, music production and sound reinforcement services, and gives instruction on guitar, mandolin, banjo, and bass. In Now & Then, Hank is featured on his stellar lead acoustic guitar and also contributes an occasional vocal.
Now & Then arose while Shelley, Dave, and Hank were jamming late one evening in the living room. All three were struck by the simple but beautiful sound of two acoustic guitars accompanying Shelley's singing. Since that fortunate evening audiences for whom they have played have responded warmly. This music is something special, and Now & Then is enjoying a growing base of fans in the Feather River region.
