The thing about the music is that as eclectic as it is, it is also very accessible. It's simple, straight-forward, melody-oriented and easy to take in.

The band is also known for the way it mixes uplifting grooves with a socially-conscious message of tribal philosophy and celebration. Donna the Buffalo also likes to challenge and inspire its audiences with thought-provoking lyrics.

A lot of bands like to describe their music as "eclectic." So it's ironic that Donna the Buffalo - one band that actually lives up to that characterization - shrugs it off. "That description of our music as a mish-mash of styles gets overplayed and I think the songwriting gets overlooked," said singer-songwriter Jeb Puryear.

Singer-songwriter Jeb Puryear founding member of Donna the Buffalo performs at the TownHall Theatre on January 29th.
The foundation of Donna the Buffalo is the songs themselves. Puryear and band mate Tara Nevins write most of the material, with band members adding their talents to the arrangements. The result is a musical melange that defies easy description but is quite accessible to listeners.

Donna the Buffalo started as a collection of old-time musicians playing fiddle tunes. But when Puryear and Nevins began writing songs, the influences expanded to include classic rock, reggae and zydeco music.

"It's really just folk music in the broad sense of that word, but all genres have negative and positive connotations, so it's hard to say that. We're not like the groups in (the film parody) 'A Mighty Wind,'" Puryear laughed. "So I've just started to tell people we play rock. That term is so meaningless these days it can mean anything."

The band has been around since 1988. Since 1999 the group has averaged 100 concerts per year, but precious few have been on the West Coast. Since its birth the band has enjoyed a successful run on the festival circuit, including gigs at North Carolina's MerleFest and Colorado's Telluride Bluegrass Festival the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee, the Newport Folk Festival and they were on the bill at the 2004 High Sierra Music Festival.

"That's where we first "discovered" Donna the Buffalo and they instantly became one of my favorite bands," expresses Roxanne Valladao, Director of Plumas Arts who will be sponsoring the concert. "We new with the spirit of the band and the vitality of the music that they would be great for our audience."

Open Seating/General Admission for the concert is $25. For Plumas Arts members Open Seating is $20. Reserved Seating in the first 5 to 7 rows is $25 for all.
